On 29 December 1890, near Wounded Knee Creek on the Pine Ridge Reservation to which Lakota Sioux people had been confided, the US 7th Cavalry Regiment entered an encampment of Miniconjou and Hunkpata Lakota, supposedly to disarm the men. After many had surrendered their rifles, the shooting started; some 300 of the Lakota were killed, about 90 warriors and the rest civilians including women and children.
